MP4, MOV and WebM are containers. Decoding depends on the codec and browser/device support; not every file in these containers will open.
How to use it
Choose a video file or drop it onto the stage. Wait for the preview to load.
Navigate with the timeline, frame number or arrow keys. Collect a frame with E, or extract an evenly spaced selection across the clip or a frame range.
Choose PNG or JPEG or WEBP for export. Changing the format keeps your collected frames.
Download an individual frame or the collection as a ZIP. You can also copy a PNG to the clipboard in supported browsers.
Limitations
- Collect up to 120 unique source frames. ZIP export stops above 256 MiB of encoded images; choose a smaller collection or output format.
- Frame navigation uses the source presentation timestamps, including variable frame rates. Unsupported codecs and decoded-frame mismatches produce an error.
- Exports use browser-rendered SDR at the video display dimensions. HDR sources may look different after conversion.
- Large files can exceed browser memory or decoding limits. The collection stores thumbnails and re-decodes the source for export; projects are not saved between visits.
- MP4, MOV and WebM are containers. Decoding depends on the codec and browser/device support; not every file in these containers will open.
Choosing a frame range
Frame numbers start at 1. A range from frame 11 through frame 20 includes 10 source frames. Evenly spaced extraction selects the midpoint of each time slice and removes duplicate source frames.
PNG, JPEG or WebP?
| Output | When to use it |
|---|---|
| PNG | Preserves the decoded canvas image without additional lossy image compression. Useful for editing and reference stills. |
| WebP | A compressed image format for lightweight sharing. Encoding support depends on the browser. |
| JPEG | Uses lossy image compression, usually producing smaller files. Useful for sharing and lightweight reference sets. |
Privacy and processing
The source video, extracted images and ZIP are processed locally in this browser. The tool does not upload media to Avo servers. No account is required.
Changing the source or leaving the page releases the working files. Downloaded images remain wherever you saved them. This describes media processing, not the website's general analytics or cookie policy.
Questions
Can I extract every frame?
You can collect individual source frames or a batch, up to 120 unique frames. This is not an unlimited export of every frame in a long video.
Does extracting an image improve the video quality?
No. Images use the decoded video dimensions. PNG avoids additional lossy image compression, but cannot restore detail already lost in the source video.
Why will my MOV or MP4 not open?
MP4, MOV and WebM are containers. Decoding depends on the codec and browser/device support; not every file in these containers will open.
